Bilge System

The information provided is for a 2002 Duffy 18' Classic. Many systems and components are common across models and years.
It is up to you to determine if this information applies to your boat or not.

Bilge Pump and Float Switch

The bilge pump is controlled in one of two ways:

  1. Automatically via a float switch near the pump, powered by an always-on 12V feed from the batteries or
  2. Manually via a switch on the instrument panel that is powered when the key switch is on.

Bilge Schematic

The manual switch is wired in parallel with the float switch, so it will override the float switch when on. It is a good idea to briefly run the bilge pump each time you use the boat.

The bilge pump and float switch are not Duffy-specific and are commonly available. They are located at the lowest point in the boat and are accessible via an access panel that is screwed to the floor just forward of the steering console. Water flows from forward and aft to the bilge pump compartment via relatively small pipes that can become clogged.

You can test the float system by opening the access panel and lifting the float switch. The motor should run with the float raised and the key switch off.
Test the bilge drain lines by pouring water into the front and back of the boat. It should all collect at the bilge pump and you will be able to see it flowing through the bilge hoses into the pump area.

The pump is designed to move large amounts of water for a short period of time. It will not keep the boat afloat if there is a steady and significant source of water entering the boat. If operated excessively, the pump will overheat and will either fail or will temporarily stop operating until it cools down to normal operating temperature.
