Electric Motor Inspection

The information provided is for a 2002 Duffy 18' Classic. Many systems and components are common across models and years.
It is up to you to determine if this information applies to your boat or not.

The electric motor has four brushes that require periodic inspection. These are industrial motors designed for far more use than your boat is likely to have experienced, so this is unlikely to be a problem area.

Ensure that your key switch is off and remove the key. Ensure that there is no power to the motor.
A metal cage covers the brushes and commutator.

Flip open the clip to loosen the cage and remove it.

The four brushes are now visible.

A spring rests on each brush, forcing it against the commutator. Each spring should be well aligned on a brush. The above picture shows a misaligned spring.
There should be ample brush material above each brush housing.
Inspect the commutator for abnormal wear.

Reinstall the cage, ensuring that it is clear of electrical terminals.
